November 2026 CCASM Meeting

November 19, 2026 (7 PM)

Mapping the Dragon: An Indigenous History of Bacon's Rebellion

Bacon's Rebellion (1676) is considered one of the 17th-century's transformative events, triggered in Maryland and finished in Virginia. Historians have been writing about it since 1705, but always from the point of view of the rebel, Nathaniel Bacon, or his adversary, Governor William Berkeley. But what if we take the point of view of the Native people, the very people Bacon hoped to wipe out or sell into slavery? A team of researchers, including archaeologists, historians, and Pamunkey and Rappahannock citizens set out to answer that question.

Dr. Julia King
Professor of Anthropology , St. Mary’s College of Maryland
