Maryland Archaeology Month Display at La Plata Library

Public Archeology Lab 
Volunteer at the on-going Public Archaeology Lab and process artifacts recovered from various archaeology initiatives in Charles County.

Saturday, April 7
Public Archaeology Fieldwork
Snow and rain is predicted in Charles County for Saturday, April 7.  So the scheduled Public Archaeology Day at Stagg Hall has been canceled.  It will be rescheduled later in the spring when it's warmer, and there is no more snow.

Saturday, April 7 (11 am - 2:30 pm) - Calvert County
Flint Knapping Workshop
Ever wonder how Native Americans made stone tools? During this workshop you will learn the techniques to turn stone into tools. The workshop will include how to select material, the science behind knapping and the chance to create your own stone arrowheads. This workshop is perfect for ages 13 and up.  Cost $15/ Friends of JPPM $12

Update on Smith’s St. Leonard Site
Hear Ed Chaney provide an update on the archaeology being done at the Smith’s St. Leonard Site (18CV91), an 18th century site located in Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum.

Sunday, April 15 (12:30 -Boats begin running to Island; 2pm-Ceremony) - St Mary's County
The Black Diamond Disaster: Forgotten Tragedy on the Potomac
On April 23rd 1865, The Black Diamond was struck by The Massachusetts, and she sank.  Eighty-seven men were lost, but no one remembers. This event will bring this story and others of the Civil War in Southern Maryland to life, and includes special tours of the Blackstone Island Lighthouse. Location: St. Clement’s Island Museum and St. Clement’s Island State Park

Bring the entire family for a day of interactive learning and fun, including  archaeological site and lab tours, exhibits, games and cool crafts.  Experience, discover, learn, and have fun exploring the “what, where, and how’s” of archaeology! 
(CCASM will be one of the archaeology organizations having a table at the event.)

Tour Historic St. Mary's City Archaeology Laboratories
Join HSMC Curator and Lab Director Silas Hurry and members of the St. Mary's County chapter of the Archaeological Society of Maryland in a guided tour of the newly constructed curation and study facility located in Anne Arundel Hall on the campus of St. Mary's College of Maryland.
