Ideas for CCASM Display

CCASM will be sponsoring both a history award and a science award at the first Charles County History, Industry, Technology, and Science (H.I.T.S.) Expo that will combine the History Fair and the Science Fair.  The Award Sponsors have been invited to have a display/presentation at the Expo.  One purpose is to showcase the sponsor's organization and another is to highlight opportunities in Southern Maryland.

We plan to participate in the Expo and to use a three-panel display board to showcase archaeology and our organization.  So this is an experiment to get input about what CCASM should put on the display.

Please comment with your thoughts and ideas.  Below are some ideas to get started.

1.  (might take up one panel)

What is Archaeology?

Archaeology is the study of the material record of the human past
  • sites - where there was human activity
  • artifacts - objects made, used, or changed by humans
Archaeology links with many subjects, including
history, geography, geology, biology, chemistry

[Does anyone have any ideas of how to indicate some of the links to the these subjects - especially the scientific ones?

2.  (could take up two panels, but could be condensed if needed)

What is CCASM Doing?
  • Meetings with Talks and/or Workshops   (2-3 pictures)
  • Public Outreach    (2-3 pictures)
  • Archaeology    (2-3 pictures)
  • Documentation  (2 pictures?)
[Pictures for what events would you like to see highlighted?  You can always check out those on the blog.  We have lots of pictures.]

3.
[What else should we be considering for the display or to place on the tablebtw we can only show actual artifacts if we have someone manning the table.]

Outfitting Outlander: So much more than kilts, ya ken!

Sara Rivers-Cofield
Last year the MAC Lab created an exhibit that tied 18th-century artifacts recovered by archaeologists in Maryland to scenes from the Starz period drama Outlander.  At the January 14 CCASM meeting Sara Rivers-Cofield discussed the creation of the "traveling" exhibit, the various sites associated with the artifacts in the display, and the historical accuracy of the Outlander's costumes and props.

Since the exhibit is currently at London Town, Sara brought examples of 18th-century artifacts that had not been included.  This included bottle corks and silver threads.  A microscope was needed to view the silver threads.  She also brought examples of clothing from her own collection.

Sara Rivers-Cofield is a curator at the Maryland Archaeological Conservation Lab (MAC Lab) at Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum.
